The Almirola Family’s Leap of Generosity
NASCAR driver Aric Almirola was surprised to find that, even after achieving professional success in racing, he did not feel satisfied.
“I finally had a moment with God where I said, ‘Alright, I can’t fill [this emptiness] with anything else, I need you,’” he told us. When a pastor suggested he read Matthew 6, Aric realized that he had to seek God’s kingdom first, stewarding his resources to serve God’s purposes.
Deciding to be generous happened little by little. Aric credits his wife, Janice, for bringing joy into their family’s generosity journey. She loves sharing their blessings and making an impact in someone else’s life. Aric was more used to saving than giving, but the more he practiced giving, the more comfortable it became. He told us, “Every single time I do it, I end up not missing it. God still provides.”
The Almirolas chose to use a donor advised fund to coordinate their giving because it is the easiest way to set aside money specifically for generosity. As they practice generosity with their young children, the DAF also provides assurance that their children will be able to continue the family legacy of generosity into the future.
“We don’t have to worry,” said Janice. “If … our kids don’t know where those funds should go, they can look back at our history to see what we’ve supported in the past.” She added that The Signatry’s commitment to vetting nonprofits for values alignment also gives her peace about where her future generations will direct the funds.
Opening a DAF is a leap of faith. By taking that leap, the Almirola family has found a practical way to practice cheerful generosity that will last for generations.
